Compare
and Contrast Essay

Throughout roughly the last 200 years the Existentialist
movement has blossomed.  Hundreds of
people came forward, willing to conform to this idealism.  There are many important people to come out
of this movement, such as Sartre.  Being
able to compare and contrast Sartre with other existentialists like, Friedrich
Nietzsche could be important to our overall understanding of Existentialism.

There are many similarities between Sartre and
Nietzsche.  One of the most common ones
is their critique or non-belief in a higher power, such as God.  Sartre was in the positon of belief that
there was no creator (God).  Nietzsche
was a severe critic of religion, and the overall understood point of God.  He went as far as to state “God is dead” (Nietzsche).  They both made a point of using the term
“Nausea” (Nietzsche) to describe the overall quality of existence.  Sartre wrote a book titled “Being and Nothingness,” which takes
that earlier mentioned term of “Nausea” (Nietzsche) from one of Nietzsche’s
worked which is titled “Thus Spoke
Zarathustra”.   The two men didn’t view everything the
same though.

They had many differing opinions on a lot of things in
life.  One of their biggest contrasts was
their views on Platonism.  It is defined
as the philosophy of Plato and his followers. Sartre’s view of this theory is
the overall denial of its truth, and his rejection of Plato’s ideas and
attitudes.  Another difference between
them would be their view of people overall.
Sartre has been known to think ‘ironically” of those with beliefs that
values of an overall existence. Then, Nietzsche goes on the route of grouping
these people as being taught as “Sheep-like”, all only following a “herd”.

Overall, being able to compare and contrast Sartre with
other existentialists like, Friedrich Nietzsche could be important to our overall
understanding of Existentialism.  Both of
these men have similar views on God, and existence. Then also have a difference
of opinion when it comes to Plato’s theory and people in general.  Even with those differing mind sets, they are
both still Existentialists.
