How to Measure

Measuring fossils can be tricky business. There are several options that can be used to measure fossils. One way is to use a ruler. However, sometimes people have difficulties measuring 3-D objects with a 2-D ruler, so here are some alternative ideas.

Use a compass: The Fossil Finders staff have identified length and width dimensions on the different types of fossils seen in the Devonian. Simply place the compass points at either end of the length and width dimensions, then, without moving the compass points, hold the compass in front of a ruler to get the length and width measurements.

Use transparency paper: When multiple fossils are found on the same rock, this can be a particularly useful method. Place the transparency sheet over the fossil and trace the outline, marking the length and width dimensions. Then, use a ruler to measure the length and width on the transparency. When finished, you can overlay the transparency back on the rock to ensure that each fossil was counted and measured, but that no fossil was counted and measured more than once.

For examples of exactly how to measure using each method, see the How to Measure powerpoint.
